•Solution of an infinite plane containing a macro-crack and a micro-crack is presented.•The stress intensity factor, stress field and strain energy density are obtained.•The influence of the micro-crack on SIF of the macro-crack is analyzed.•The macro-crack propagation direction is predicted.
