Mixed gonococcal infections and antimicrobial resistance surveillance

Background: There are a lack of data with respect to whether Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) strains exhibiting distinct antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profiles are present in the same patient specimen. Such mixed infections may not be detected by routine laboratory practices and their incidence remains unknown. This study was conducted to ascertain the impact of mixed gonococcal infections on AMR surveillance from a high-risk population group in Sydney.
