Procedural complexity underlies the efficiency advantage in abacus-based arithmetic development

•We describe the implementation of dual-base calculation procedures based on the abacus frame.•We show that abacus users (including young children) employ dual base procedures when performing mental calculation.•We propose that abacus instruction has specific and striking effects on the development of arithmetic concepts and procedures.
