Effects of Methanolic Leaves Extract Of Balanites Aegyptiaca Del on Some Biochemical Parameters in Wistar Strain Albino Rats

Background : Balanites Aegyptiaca leaves has been used as ingredient and in the preparation of local foods and serves as a medicinal plant in many developing countries. The objective is to elucidate the effect of methanolic leave extract of Balanites Aegyptiaca on some biochemical parameters in Wistar rats. Methods : A three week repeated dose toxicity study of methanolic extract of Balanites Aegyptiaca  leaves was performed on Wister strain rats separated into four groups of five animals each. Group 1 the control group, Group 2, 3 and 4 administered 200mg/kg, 400mg/kg and 800mg/kg of the extract respectively. They were sacrificed after 21 days and blood collected for determination of biochemical parameters. Results : The results shows a significant decrease (P<0.05) in the level of alkaline phosphatase but no significant change in the levels of ALAT, ASAT, total protein, albumin, creatinine, urea, sodium, potassium and chloride. Conclusion: Administration of the methanolic leave extract of Balanites Aegyptiaca  did not reveal marked changes in the in the toxicological parameters been assayed except for the observed decrease in alkaline phosphatase.  Keywords: Alanine Transaminase , Aspartate Transaminase, Balanites Aegyptiaca , Body Weight, Wistar Rats, Elderly, Cerebrovascular diseases.
