•Enemy diversity generally increases biocontrol but effects are context dependent.•Enemy and prey traits and the environment moderate the effect of enemy diversity.•Enemy diversity is probably important as an insurance against climate change.•Future work should increase scale and realism and also study biocontrol stability.
