•Alexandrium sp. can produce PST and other bioactive extracellular compounds (BEC) with allelopathic and cytotoxic activity.•BEC cause tissue alteration, thus altering recognition and feeding processes of P. maximus.•PST reduce the efficiency of scallop P. maximus escape response and cause muscular damages.
