A data-analysis on the conservation and nutritive value of sugarcane silage treated with calcium oxide

•Calcium oxide decreases ethanol formation and nutrient losses in sugarcane silage.•Sugarcane silage treated with calcium oxide has greater aerobic stability.•Calcium oxide increases enterobacteria, clostridia, ammonia and butyric acid.•Better nutrient preservation was not translated into animal performance.•Treating sugarcane silage with calcium oxide alone might not be recommended.
