Cytosine DNA methylation at promoter of non LTR retrotransposon and heat shock protein gene (HSP70) of Entamoeba histolytica and lack of correlation with transcription status

•The retrotransposon EhLINE1 consists of transcriptionally active and silent copies.•The promoter of an active copy was located in a 841bp fragment at its 5′-end.•No cytosine methylation of promoter was seen in active or silent copies.•EhHsp70 promoter was fully methylated irrespective of transcription status.•Promoter methylation is not correlated with transcription level in E. histolytica.
