Soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy study of chemical states, orientation, and oxygen content of ion-irradiated vertically aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes

•Carboxyl groups on the surface were formed after the ion irradiation.•The nanotubes were randomly oriented with respect to the substrate plane.•The O/C atomic ratios in the films increase with increasing ion energy and fluence.
