Effect of Self-Management Program on Self-Efficacy in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Abstract
Abstract Background & Aim: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) has been considered as one of the most common chronic diseases that lead to drop in authority and function in patients, and this has caused significant challenges in the care systems. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of self-management program on self-efficacy in patients with COPD to find efficient method to improve the patients’ health status. Material & Methods: This randomized clinical trial was performed on 50 COPD patients with moderate and severe grade who have the inclusion criteria. Patients were randomly assigned to control and intervention groups. Intervention group received the self-management program in addition to the regular care based on 5A model. All Patients were assessed by self-efficacy scale questionnaire at the beginning of the intervention and after 3 months. The t-test and chi square was used in SPSS software to analyze the data. Results: The results show that there was no significant difference between the groups in self-efficacy at first, but there was significant difference after intervention (P<0.05). Also, comparing the self-efficacy difference mean in the groups showed significant difference (P<0.05). Conclusion: Regarding to the effectiveness of short term self-management program on the improvement of self-efficacy in patients with COPD, use of self-management program in addition to routine practice care is recommended.
