Economic Burden of Sporadic Inclusion Body Myositis Patients in the United States (P1.135)

Objective:To assess the economic burden of patients with Sporadic Inclusion Body Myositis (sIBM) in the United States.Background: sIBM is a rare and debilitating muscle disease and may impose substantial economic burden on patients and healthcare systems. To date, there have been no assessments of the economic burden of sIBM.Methods:Two different data sources were utilized to assess healthcare and patient economic burden. Truven MarketScan Commercial u0026 Medicare supplemental administrative claims database provided direct healthcare costs of sIBM patients over a one year period. The sIBM cohort included patients (≥50 years) with ≥2 outpatient diagnoses of sIBM ≥7 days apart or with ≥ 1 inpatient sIBM diagnosis identified between January 1, 2010 u0026 December 31, 2012. Indirect costs (non-reimbursed costs) borne by patients and caregivers included home modifications, specialized equipment and payment to professional paid help. Costs were assessed using patient self-reported data collected at The Myositis Conference (TMA) in 2013 and 2014. All costs were adjusted to 2014 prices.Results:333 sIBM patients (66[percnt] male) with a mean age of 69 years (SD: 9.6) were included in the Truven Marketscan analysis. Over a one year period, mean healthcare costs for sIBM patients were $34,738 (SD: $53,517; median: $13,048), driven by outpatient costs (mean: $21,051; SD: $38,664; median: $8,092). 102 sIBM patients (62[percnt] male) were included in TMA with a mean age of 67 years (SD: 8.0), mean time since disease onset of 11.3 years and mean time since diagnosis of 5.3 years. Mean cost since diagnosis of specialized equipment was $9,975 (SD: $39,417; median: $1,000) and of home modifications was $148,348 (SD: $912,795; median: $4,000). Mean annual cost of professional paid help at home was $12,138 (SD: $44,360; median $1,200).Conclusion: sIBM imposes substantial economic burden in terms of both direct healthcare costs u0026 indirect costs.
