•Our research is on various methods of improving the efficiency of small gas engines.•In the short term, turbocharged stoichiometric combustion with EGR will be the best technology.•In the medium-to-long term, it will be more effective to develop lower-temperature combustion.•Turbocharged HCCI and D-EGR are the options with increased EGR ratio.
