•Effects of NiMo phases on the hydrodesulfurization activities were investigated.•A high BET surface area (144m2g−1) with a H2-type hysteresis loop was detected on NiMo-0.5 precursor.•NiMo catalyst deriving from β-NiMoO4 phase was more active than that from α-NiMoO4 phase.
