•Rice response to drought and bacterial blight (BB) were studied in combination.•The BB resistance (R) gene Xa4 showed less effectiveness under drought stress.•Rice drought QTL (qDTY) lines without R genes were susceptible to BB.•Drought reduced the BB resistance of lines with Xa4+qDTY.
