A synthesis of the environmental response of the North and South Atlantic Sub-Tropical Gyres during two decades of AMT

•We investigate the bio-physical functioning of the Atlantic Sub-Tropical Gyres.•We do this using AMT in situ data, remote-sensing and ecosystem modelling.•We define gyre boundary from a gradient in biological and physical variables.•Chlorophyll increases within both gyres are seen over the AMT period.
