Analysis of structural and functional indicators for assessing the health state of mountain streams

•We analysed the effects of organic pollution in mountain streams.•We used functional and structural indicators in pools, runs and at reach scale.•Most indicators differed in their behavior when exposed to high levels of pollution.•Similar behavior in pools and runs, while effects more easily detected at reach scale.•Combining structural and functional indicators helps understanding pollution effects.
