Microwave-assisted preparation and characterization of mesoporous activated carbon from mushroom roots by phytic acid (C6H18O24P6) activation

•Nine kinds of activated carbon (AC) were prepared using microwave irradiation.•Phytic acid was used as the activating agent.•The carbon properties were more affected by impregnation ratio than power.•Well-developed mesoporous structures were obtained on the carbons.•The carbons showed favorable to surface chemistry, especially surface acidity.
