•Olfactory bulbectomy (OB) elevates ZnT1 protein level in the PFC and Hp of rats.•OB is associated with decreased levels of ZnT3 protein in the PFC.•OB elevates mRNA and protein levels of MT1 and MT2 in the PFC of rats.
