Synthesis and properties of poly(arylenephthalide ketones)

Symmetric aromatic ketones, new monomers useful for the preparation of polybeteroarylenes, were synthesized by the Friedel-Crafts electrophilic substitution reaction via the interaction of isophthaloyl chloride with diphenyl, diphenyl oxide, diphenylene oxide, fluorene, and terphenyl, as well as terephthaloyl chloride with diphenyl oxide. Polycondensation of these compounds with 4',4"-bis(2-carboxybenzoyl)diphenyl oxide and 4',4"-bis(2-carboxybenzoyl)terphenyl pseudoacid dichlorides yielded heat resistant and thermally stable poly(arylenephthalide ketones). The structure of the synthesized monomers and polymers was studied using H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. The effect of the chemical structure of polymer chains on the properties of poly(arylenephthalide ketones) was examined.
