•The use of stable isotope method to partition evapotranspiration over winter wheat.•The partition of available energy is strongly depended on the LAI and (Ts-Ta).•The plant transpiration is the dominant source for total evapotranspiration (ET).•The T/ET ratios are on average 69% and 80% after and prior irrigation, respectively.
