•Porous Co3O4 hexagonal nanosheets have been synthesized.•A novel mediator-free biosensor, Co3O4-HRP/rGO/GCE, has been fabricated.•The biosensor displays a wide linear range of 1–5400μM for NaNO2.•The biosensor exhibits a low detection limit of 0.21μM for NaNO2.
