•CoFe2O4-TETA-GO are synthesized first and used for Cr (VI) removal.•Cr (VI)-loaded adsorbent is separated under additional magnetic field.•The saturated adsorption capacity of Cr (VI) is about 183.82mg/g.•Electrostatic attraction is considered to be the main removal mechanism.
