•The dietary composition of menus was evaluated using region and season as important factors.•Energy and nutrient content of coastal menus is related to the MD pattern.•Number of servings of fruits, vegetable and dairy was higher in the coastal region.•The PCA revealed dietary differences by geographic region (continental vs. coastal).•The coastal pattern was seen in lunches and dinners, as confirmed by the PCA.
