Thermal properties of slag films taken from continuous casting mould

Measurements of the thermal diffusivity and conductivity, heat capacity, absorption and extinction coefficients, refractive indices, and densities have been derived for slag films taken from the continuous casting mould. These data have been used to analyse the mechanism for heat transfer between the steel strand and the mould. It is shown that contributions from radiation conduction are unlikely to exceed 10% of those derived from lattice thermal conduction. The main factor affecting the radiation conduction was found to be the crystallinity developed in the slag film and not the pickup of transition metal oxides by the slag during casting.
