P2 and behavioral effects of stroke count in Chinese characters: Evidence for an analytic and attentional view.

•Characters with more strokes elicited greater P2 and lower N2 but equal N400.•Both response latency and error rate increased with the stroke counts.•These effects provide evidence for the analytic view of character processing.•The greater P2 may reflect greater attentional load and reduced resource per stroke.
