Abstract
A new stratigraphic unit, Yueguifeng Formation, is set up for the Paleogene strata in the western belt of the Taipei Depression of the continental shelf, the East China Sea. It lies above the red layer of the Shimentan Formation and is covered by the Lingfeng Formation. The relationships between the three formations are unconformity. The Yueguifeng Formation is composed of grey, black silt and sand. Based on the analysis of paleontology and petrology, the Yueguifeng Formation is assigned to the Paleocene, correlated to the Funin Formation in the Northern Jiangsu Basin. The paleontologic analysis also suggests that the Yueguifeng Formation was deposited in a fresh water lacustrine environment.
