•The impact of SFCL and SMES integration on the circle distance relay is studied.•The detailed models of SFCL and SMES with distance delay are built in MATLAB.•The integration of SFCL and SMES does influence the operation of distance relay.•An improved distance relay to prevent mal-operation is proposed and verified.
