•Novel method for synthesis of graphene nanoribbons from nickel-carbon nanowires was developed.•Graphene quantum dots were used as a carbon source.•Nickel-carbon nanowires were subjected to rapid thermal annealing at different temperatures.•Graphene nanoribbons exhibit blue photoluminescence at 446nm.
