Time constrained liner shipping network design

•We present a solution method for the liner shipping network design problem.•Restrictions on transit time and number of transshipments can be handled.•The improvement heuristic is applicable as a real-time decision support tool.•We can construct high-quality networks for realistic data sets.•Insights about vessel speeds and rejected cargos are presented.
