Abstract
•Deployment of genetic and species diversity can improve wheat performance in organic and low-input cropping systems.•Local adaptation of cultivars is a prerequisite to improve crop performance, but crop diversity can reduce the susceptibility to unpredictable stress.•Composite Cross Populations are a promising strategy as they can improve resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses without reducing yield.•Legume living mulches can improve weed reduction with limited impact on wheat grain yield.
