The creation of a new vowel category by adult learners after adaptive phonetic training.

•Two groups of learners were identified based on their cue-weighting patterns after training.•Only one of the groups appears to have created a new vowel category along the spectral dimension.•Phonetic category dissimilation was observed with the group that created a new vowel category.•Our results point to individual differences in acquiring novel speech categories.
