Evidence for two distinct domains of negative symptoms: Confirming the factorial structure of the CAINS.

•CFA confirmed two CAINS subscales with distinct correlational profiles.•Amotivation was strongly associated with functional outcome and depression.•Deficits in expression seem to be indicative for primary negative symptoms.•Test-retest reliability was moderate for the CAINS and its “expression” subscale.•Test-retest reliability was low for the “motivation and pleasure” subscale.
