•This study proved that BMP and PTH may facilitates healing of bone defect by increasing the degradation of ceramics.•To analyze the bone formation and degradation of ceramics, a specific method was applied, which was seldom applied in previous studies.•The callous and trabecular bone of distal femur beneath the bone defect was also researched, which illustrated various aspects of BMP’s effect.
