•Children of mothers experiencing subclinical and high anxiety symptoms in pregnancy and early parenting years had increased risk of delays in communication and personal-social development.•Children of mothers experiencing postpartum depression had increased risk of delays in their personal-social development.•Identifying and supporting mothers having postpartum depression and subclinical and high anxiety symptoms may mitigate the associated child developmental delays.
