In vitro bioaccessibility of Al, Cu, Cd, and Pb following simulated gastro-intestinal digestion and total content of these metals in different Brazilian brands of yerba mate tea

•The highest concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb and Al were determined in hot infusions prepared with yerba mate tea.•The relationship between the Al in the infusions and the phenolic compounds was observed.•Bioaccessibility of Al, Cu, Cd, and Pb in yerba mate tea infusions was evaluated by in vitro digestion.•In general, Cd and Cu were the most bioaccessible metals in the infusions.
