Abstract
This study deals with the synthesis of nano-copper on denim garment for antibacterial properties and the combination with nano-clay to achieve decolored and old looking garment. In-situ synthesis of nano-copper was carried out on denim garment by the reduction of copper(II) sulfate with glucose as a reducing agent through a simple and cost-effective route. Color of the samples were determined by L*a*b* indices and also color differences were measured to realize the action of nano-copper and nano-clay on the garments. UV–visible spectrum of the remaining solution after the treatment confirmed synthesis of copper nanoparticles in the solution. XRD and EDX analyses on the treated garments proved the synthesis of the nano-copper and presence of nano-clay on the treated samples. SEM images showed the shapes, sizes and distributions of the nano-copper and nano-clay particles on the garments. A significant reduction for the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria was obtained on the treated garment that was durable against washing.
