•Traces left by the discharge of six Liberators have been collected.•Polymer traces were found on the elements of ammunition.•Polymer pieces were found a few metres around the place of the discharge.•Cartridge case head traces were found on the hammer body of the Liberator.•Cartridge cases are swollen and sometimes even torn.
