•A strong correlation between Wolbachia and parthenogenesis is reported in a weevil.•Unisexual populations are infected and highly divergent from the sexual pool.•Four analyses identified divergent mitochondrial lineages as separate species.•A model of speciation by symbiosis with Wolbachia is discussed.
