•Malnutrition prevalence in patients waiting for a liver transplant is high.•The prevalence of malnutrition varied depending on the method of evaluation.•The overall agreement among the malnutrition assessment methods was low.•PNI-O was the method of assessment malnutrition with the highest overall agreement.•NRI obtained the highest positive likelihood ratio for the diagnosis of malnutrition.
