•A carboxymethylated polysaccharide (CMSERP) was prepared from the residue of Sarcandra glabra (Thunb.) Nakai.•The structural characteristics were investigated by a combination of chemical and instrumental analysis approaches.•CMSERP exhibited significant α-glycosidase inhibition activity in vitro.
