Epidemiological study of mortality in epilepsy in a Spanish population.

•We have studied the mortality in a hospital-based cohort of patients with epilepsy.•The overall standardised mortality ratio is 2.11 (95% CI 1.73–2.59).•Therés an increased mortality in younger age groups and for symptomatic epilepsies.•Most deaths are due to natural and non-strictly related to epilepsy causes.•This is the first epidemiological study of mortality in epilepsy conducted in Spain.
