摘要

•The evaluation of the oral swab (OS) as an alternative sample for the molecular diagnosis of dogs infected with L. infantum is proposed.•OS performs well for detecting infection in dogs with clinical signs.•For dogs with subclinical infection is necessary combining OS results with those of conjunctival swab (CS) and/or serology for detecting most of the cases.•OS and CS can detect L. infantum infection in seronegative dogs.
