•Ontogenetic amh, amhr2 and progesterone receptor mRNA profiles were characterized.•amh and amhr2 mRNA levels showed sexually dimorphic developmental patterns.•The present study is the first to report amhr2 mRNA levels in amphibians.•The Müllerian ducts started to develop at the end of the larval period.•amh mRNA is proposed as a testicular marker in Xenopus tropicalis tadpoles.
