•The experiences of older men with prostate cancer is an understudied topic.•Prostate cancer can have a big impact on the emotional, social, sexual and daily lives of older men.•Communication, information provision and decision-making to older men with prostate cancer can be improved.•By increasing the accessibility of care professionals, men can be stimulated to talk about their problems and ask for help.
