•Tissue adhesives are desired with low cytotoxicity and high tissue adhesion.•Catechol- and phenol-modified gelatin were synthesized respectively.•Adhesives were prepared via photochemistry or mussel-inspired chemistry.•Adhesives were evaluated by mechanical properties, tissue adhesion and toxicity.
