Abstract

•A novel NAC transcription factor MlNAC12 from M. lutarioriparius was functionally characterized in transgenic Arabidopsis.•MlNAC12 encodes a nuclear-localized protein, which can specifically bind to the NACRS cis-element and has transactivation activity in the C-terminus.•Overexpression of MlNAC12 confers hypersensitivity to Abscisic acid (ABA).•MlNAC12 modulates drought and salt stress response through activation of stress responsive genes and anti-oxidative enzymes.
