•Chemically-dispersed oil treatments resulted in lower photosynthetic rates and quantum yields.•Diatoms were the dominant eukaryote taxa in oil-only treatments, and the Euglenozoa dominated dispersed oil treatments.•More aggregation occurred in treatments that inhibited phytoplankton growth and photophysiology.
