Evaluation of inhibitory effect and feasible utilization of dilute acid-pretreated rice straws on succinate production by metabolically engineered Escherichia coli AS1600a.

•We firstly reported succinate production from the H3PO4-pretreated rice straw.•Fermentations were carried out by a metabolically engineered E. coli AS1600a.•Both liquid hydrolysate and solid fraction of pre-treated rice straw were utilized.•Succinate titer of 85.6 g/L with yield of 0.9 g/g was produced during SSF process.•Titer and yield obtained here were highest among those of other published works.
