•Mastectomy with immediate reconstruction patients had a 22% incidence of a wound complication.•There is a significantly increased risk of post-operative wound complications in obese women.•Patients with wound complications did have an increased time from surgery to adjuvant therapy.•Post-operative wound complications were not associated with breast cancer recurrence.
