•Human hematopoietic cells are heterogeneous in terms of their cell cycle.•UCB cells in G0/G1 showed higher proliferation potential in vitro.•Treatment with HU induced an increase in the proportion of G1 cells.•HU also induced an increase in the frequency of CFCs.•HU favored the development of the E lineage.
